At a time when all the major media are crying foul (and rightly so) about the police and town administrations that are investigating themselves, they all accept, without question, an internal investigation about a ferry sinking. There are officials in the ferry corporation that do not want the light of day to shine upon the truth of that affair. They want the crew to be blamed for all that happened. To quote Paul St. Pierre "the innocent are blamed, the guilty promoted".
And there is a lot to be examined.
The Captain of a ship is responsible for all that happens on his ship. The condition of the ship, the condition of the equipment on his ship, the crew of the ship and their training.
The Admiral of the fleet is responsible for the condition of the fleet. He is responsible for the Captains of the ships and the crews of the ships. He is also responsible for the condition of the ship and the conditions on the ships. He is responsible for the training of all the crews under his command.
Understand that he is not the one to do all of the above, but he is the one to make sure that all this is done. Who is the Admiral of the BC Ferries Fleet? David Haun.
It has been a year since the Queen went down and the major media organizations have not once questioned the quality of the training and the quality of the safety programs on the fleet. These are the two most important things Haun should have been doing, not just raising the fares.
From the news reports one can deduce that the bridge crew on that night were not trained (the one on the helm did not know where the auto pilot switch was). That shows a lack of primary training. When she took over the helm, she did not know the position of the ship. Lack of procedure.
Micheal Smythe whines about the two crew members who would not testify. Why would they testify to an INTERNAL inquiry, one that was predestined to "punish the innocent, and gain promotions for the guilty".
The major media need to do a series on Mr. Haun's safety record starting from when he came to B.C. (or further back) and detail his record of crashes, burn outs, ships running into marinas and trucks doing the high dive from ferry ramps.
And just do the actuals, not a witch hunt like was done to the police woman from North Vancouver who had a drink too many.
And remember, he, David Haun, is the Admiral.
