For us Spartans the story of Carol's "Hwin" is the top story of our lives and that goes for most of Hazelton; for Canadians this was the best Olympic experience since Donovan; its nice that Carol was there with other huge stories like Phelps and Bolt, and I say to all who commented on our belated victory, that your wisdom added to it all, since Games are certainly a form of war against war, and the story is the real reason for it all.
Hazelton is center of the well known Indian Land Claim case, Delgamuukw, and that trial has lasting impact on Canada too, helping Tribes overcome the terrible dark days of oppression and rejection, resulting from the kind of racism and elitist politics that produced another marvelous Olympics story, when Jesse Owens put it to Hitler in '36.
I would like to express that the first thing to understand about life itself is that it is a story, what we Kitksan call ADAAWK, since it is from our story that we find our direction; your story is more than just history though, its also your future and you determine where you are going by telling yourself your story. Sports are healthy because we learn to compete with others along the way of really competing with ourselves.
The annual All-Native Basketball Tournament in Prince Rupert has many stories, and we elder Spartans won it several times back in the 60's, but we also lost to other teams and I would say I gained as much or more, from losing as I did from our victories; I know I learned how to measure other competitors by engaging with them while they were triumphant. There is such a thing as how one wins, and how we lose, and I think some commentators misjudge things because they have never experienced competition at all, let alone victory. Hey what would happen it the USA team didn't win?
Reading the CBC blogs, it was something the way people either poured their hearts out or found something to complain about. What I discovered though, is that everyone loves Canada, and loves to be Canadian. The best letter on the webpages was from an Afrikan gentleman who is not yet a Canadian, but told us about his experience being helped here. He made me feel proud.
I think some of the writers are too used to being critics and want to think Canada should "look" like they do, and be as perfect as the Great One. Wayne Gretsky is the most victorious athlete we know, and Canada's Hockey fans the most demanding, so please consider what I say now in the context of us brown people: when Wayne played in the Olympics he lost, didn't medal, and I'm not the only person who saw something at that time, that told us about too much winning and and not enough losing; when the whistle sounded and Wayne didn't hear O Canada, instead of valuing his loss and going straight to those who beat him and praising them for beating the best, he went and sulked on the bench. It was the result of not really learning how to play! Bush did the same on 9-11, and look at that mess.
No, its not that Carol got the medal, its how she got it and what she said about it.
Carol came 2nd for years; she didn't make the team in '04 but went to Athens and helped her friend. That's why you saw what you did and why her heart won yours'.
Canada is the best WINNER because we even Huynh when we lose.
Watch for us?
We're about to win again.

Hello there there was a tournament in Port Alberni the Junior All Native. Why is it not news anywhere. The kids were great and your team won with honor and dignity. They are truly a great bunch of guys. Very well disiplined and well coached. Great tournament. Well done Prince Rupert.
