Sigvald age 17 before he left Norway headed for Prince Rupert
NEWS RELEASE · 6th April 2008
Mark Fremmerlid
The historic Albert Johnson known as the mad trapper may have come from Prince Rupert. In1932 this one man was involved in an incredible 7 week running battle with the RCMP backed by native trackers, military personnel, and a airplane all in tempratures hitting 50 below. I personally visited Prince Rupert and explored Digby Island in 1983 and 1988. I was searching for clues as to what happened to a missing relative named Sigvald Pederson. My grandfather had last located him in1927 hiding out in secret cabin on Digby Island. He had evaded the First World War Draft 10 years earlier and was still hiding out obsessed with the idea that the police were still looking for him. His only contact to buy supplies was a Chinese trader in Prince Rupert likely Bon Quen Mah who owned Sunrise Groceries. My investigation has recently led me to information on Sigvalds past which would cause him to take up the alias Albert Johnson. The investigation has been published in the book "What became of Sigvald Anyway?" I'm now in the process of arranging DNA of Sigvalds relatives to be sent to a documentary film company which has exhumed Albert Johnson. My anticipation is difficult to hold back.
