Canada congratulated Pakistan today on conducting an orderly election, and the presence of our observers there, despite security threats, affirms Canadian values.
The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement on the parliamentary elections held in Pakistan on February 18, 2008:
“Canada is pleased that postponed elections were conducted peacefully, and that Pakistanis turned out to vote despite concerns about security. The people of Pakistan have taken an important step toward restoring democracy in their country.
“Canada appreciates the efforts of the international observers, including four Canadians, who monitored the elections at various polling stations around the country. This demonstrates our commitment to promoting values that define our country: freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“Canada encourages Pakistan’s political leaders to work together, in a democratic and transparent manner, to form a new government that represents the will of the Pakistani people as reflected in the electoral results. Canada looks forward to working with the new Pakistani government to further advance democratic development.”
