The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in response to recent developments in Chad, particularly the fighting between government and rebel forces in the capital city of N’Djamena:
“Canada strongly condemns the attacks by rebel groups in Chad and, in particular, in N’Djamena. We join newly elected African Union President Jakaya Kikwete in expressing our deep concern with this attempt to overthrow the Chadian government by military means. We call for an immediate end to the violence.
“Canada urges all parties to resolve their differences through negotiations. We also remind the parties that they must protect all civilians and ensure full, safe and unhindered access by humanitarian workers to people in need.
“Canada encourages all Chadians to work together to restore peace and stability in their country.”
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) advises Canadians against all travel to Chad.
