NEWS RELEASE · 17th January 2008
Victoria
The New Democrats are applauding school districts for filling the leadership gap created by Campbell government inaction on the use of 15-passenger vans for student travel.

Last night, the Central Okanagan School Board passed a motion to immediately restrict the use of passenger vans for student travel. Wherever possible, students are to use school buses instead.

“School districts across British Columbia are reacting swiftly to the news that these passenger vans are dangerous for kids,” said David Cubberley, NDP Education critic. “Boards are putting student safety first by immediately restricting the use of these 15-passenger death traps.

“Despite the fact that these new restrictions might impact student trips, school trustees know that it is up to them to ensure these children are safe while on the road,” said Cubberley, MLA for Saanich South. “Unlike the Campbell government, they’re taking immediate action to protect kids.

“In contrast, the Minister of Education has not shown any leadership on this file. She has done nothing to address this critical safety issue.”

Education Minister Shirley Bond has said she has no immediate plans to stop school districts from using passenger vans.
