REPORTING · 5th January 2008
Merv Ritchie
Early this morning, January 5, 2008, starting at just after 2:30 am the southern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands started getting rattled by a series of serious earthquakes.
The first one was estimated to measure at 5.6 on the Richter scale and was followed less than half an hour later by one measuring 6.5.
That is a serious quake, yet a second 6.5 quake followed that one approximately 45 minutes later at about 3:45 am.
15 minutes later, at 4:00 am, a 5.0 quake was recorded.
The activity is happening at the junction of two fault lines directly at the southern tip of the islands. In the 24 hour period prior to these major shakes the same region recorded three minor tremors that have been recorded as 2.5 magnitude, 2.2 and a 2.1 magnitude.
We will update this report if we are advised of any further action in the shifting continental plates.
