NEWS RELEASE · 29th November 2007
Victoria
New Democrat Health Critic Adrian Dix tabled a Bill in the Legislature today that would force the B.C. Liberals to release a Medical Services Commission audit related to the Copeman Healthcare Clinic.

Yesterday, the Minister of Health announced the for-profit clinic, which charges thousands of dollars a year for health services and for the right to even see a doctor, does not violate the Canada Health Act or the B.C. Medicare Protection Act. The Minister refused to release the details of the decision publicly.

“This is a fundamental policy decision,” said Dix. “It was made in secret and in close consultation with the for-profit health providers that stand to benefit – that’s not good enough.”

The New Democrats say Gordon Campbell has given private health care the green light to multiply without any public consultation. Don Copeman, the for-profit clinic owner, has now revealed his plans for further expansion.
“The B.C. Liberal agenda continues to push forward with for-profit health care at the expense of ordinary citizens,” said Dix.

“We call on this government to release the details of this decision and the reasons behind them to the public,” said Dix. “A decision of this magnitude threatens to change the complexion of health care as we know it and requires public disclosure at the very least.”
