NEWS RELEASE · 20th November 2007
Victoria
Throughout his entire first term of office and half of his second term, Premier Gordon Campbell actually took B.C. backwards by slashing climate change programs. The Premier has now made a hasty reversal and is trying to greenwash his government. But the Premier’s approach is fraught with problems.

Gordon Campbell’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act is just more hot air...

- Gordon Campbell said that the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act, which was introduced Tuesday, “puts into law the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets in North America”.

- But the Premier wants to reduce greenhouse gases to 80 per cent below 2007 levels by 2050, which doesn’t even come close to the goals set by California, New Mexico and Oregon.

- And the Premier still hasn’t explained how we will reach the targets, even though a recent report from the Pembina Institute concludes that, “the details announced in Premier Campbell’s proposals will only reduce British Columbia’s emissions by about 5 million tonnes – 31 million tonnes less than needed to meet the goal.”

Gordon Campbell continues to shut out British Columbians from the debate…

- In September, the Premier told the Union of B.C. Municipalities that he would be appointing his “Climate Action Team” in October, but he only got around to announcing the team on the 20th of November.

- Campbell’s team has no local representative from large urban areas, and not one representative of working people.

- And despite the New Relationship, First Nations have largely been shut out of talks with the Campbell government about emissions targets and plans for a carbon credit system.

British Columbians deserve real action on climate change, not more fancy footwork from the Campbell Liberals.
