NEWS RELEASE · 6th July 2007
RCMP
Drinking and driving counterattack campaign is set to kick off July 15th, 2007.
Some of you may think the police have mixed up their seasons. Most of you are used to the Christmas CounterAttack campaign. Drinking and driving is a year round problem. Summer is a time when people may have a few drinks while camping, playing a round of golf, after a ball game or at a Friday evening barbeque. The issue is not having a few drinks, the issue is getting behind the wheel of your vehicle after you’ve had the drinks.
Impaired driving remains the #1 criminal cause of death in Canada. Last year in the Province of British Columbia, more than 400 people died in motor vehicle collisions. 30% (120) of fatalities involved an impaired driver. Impaired driving remains one the top three priorities for traffic enforcement officers along with the non-use of seatbelts and aggressive driving.
The summer CounterAttack campaign begins Sunday July 15th and runs through until August 15th inclusive. Provincial and Municipal traffic officers across the province will focus their attention on this issue in an attempt to reduce the number of alcohol related injury and fatal collisions.
Remember, impaired driving is a criminal offence. When you are caught you will be fingerprinted and you will be required to appear in court. Your drivers licence will be suspended at roadside and your vehicle will be seized. When you are convicted you could go to jail and your ability to travel outside of Canada could be affected.
Friends truly don’t let friends drink and drive.
Motorists can expect to see increased enforcement in a number of locations, in particular Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Terrace. Motorists and passengers are reminded to make arrangements for a safe ride home. If you are going to drink,... plan ahead,... don’t take a vehicle with you, take a cab, get a ride with a SOBER friend.
Also wear your seatbelt at all times as you are less likely to be injured or killed in a motor vehicle collision if you are wearing your seatbelts. Traffic Services will be working in partnership with your local detachment and others agencies to address Road Safety.
