Seems we are being overtly challenged at both our Northern and Southern borders. From the May 16 Sudbury Star;

"The U.S. also rejects our territorial boundaries.

Beginning with President Nixon in the 1970s, who wanted to show he didn't need Ottawa's permission to send ships through northern waters and promptly got stuck in the ice, successive administrations have thumbed their nose at Canada.

Most recently, David Wilkins, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, said Canada shouldn't send military icebreakers into its North because "we don't recognize Canada's claims to those waters" and added that "most other countries do not recognize their claim."

There's reason for this covetousness. As temperatures warm and ice-choked waters open up, what was once seen as a wasteland now offers a potential bonanza of oil and gold diamonds, as well as a viable northern sea route.

Even without climate change, it's imperative that Ottawa boost its military presence and demonstrate clear Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic.
