As you know, the business plan your team engaged at our local friendship centre resulted in the removal of their Elders from the storefront next to the Bank of Nova Scotia. Congratulations, because the centre is still trucking along. There have always been an abundance of needy native people in Terrace. Tons of money involved, and that's why politics destroyed that original, friendship centre history.
Shortly after you all left, one of those Elders (who still drove into her eighties, and is still full of the dickens) called me from the centre. "Get down here, I have something for your family."
Her name is Rose Verigan. She is an Elder/Matriarch from around Morristown. It was the proud Bazil family ....offended. On a rainy day, Rose held in her loving arms the framed pictures of the centre's Elders. She had fished them off the floor, out of the tin shed out back. She gave me the picture of my Mother, Pearl D. Campbell to take home.
I straddle two political realities, also.
Did you take names? One can choose to do right things, at any time......for our people.
In Tsimshian politics, I keep Elders close.....and comfy. I treat them like precious teacups. When successful, I will invite all community Elders to band council meetings.
I was born in Prince Rupert.
