On Thursday, May 12, at the same time the “Say No to Enbridge Oil” rally was taking place in Prince Rupert a rally was quickly organized and held in the Greater Masset area. John Disney referred to it as a phenomenal success considering they began organizing it only 48 hours earlier.
“We had 260 plus people from all over Haida Gwaii attend and the mood was positive, excited and totally committed to taking this threat head on. The youth were heavily involved as were the kids, elders, teachers, Haida, politicians-in fact people from all walks of life. “ Disney added there was a determination to make this just the first step and if the Enbridge project and the oil tankers went ahead it would be over their dead bodies.
There are plans to form an organized formal Haida Gwaii group and and then strategize.
“In the future I think you will see gatherings of around 1,000 and we will be loud and unbending.” stated Disney
