NEWS RELEASE · 16th May 2011

Communities across the country, including Prince Rupert, depend on wetlands every day. Wetlands naturally filter drinking water, offer protection from harmful floods, droughts and erosion, provide vital habitat for hundreds of species of wildlife and act as outdoor playgrounds for a variety of recreational activities. But, Canada’s wetlands are in serious danger. Up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in settled areas of the country, and more are lost each day.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is urging residents in Prince Rupert to help save these precious resources by starting a volunteer chapter in their community.

DUC is committed to conserving Canada’s wetlands for the benefit of waterfowl, other wildlife and people. And, volunteers are at the heart of it all. More than 7,400 volunteers in chapters across the country help organize a variety of unique fundraising activities that provide much-needed funds for DUC’s on-the-ground habitat conservation projects, scientific research and education programs. Whether you organize a fundraising banquet, auction or golf tournament, volunteering for DUC is a fun and rewarding way to give back to your community and conserve wetlands.

“Volunteering for DUC is a great way to have fun with friends and make new ones,” says Ken Ferris, DUC’s Northern BC’s fundraising manager. “DUC volunteers share many of the same interests and have a great time working together to support wetland conservation. And, it doesn’t have to take up a lot of time and effort. With Ducks, we can tailor your volunteerism with the amount of time you can give and what suits your personal talents. Any time you give will make a real difference in the future of Canada’s wetlands.”

During these challenging economic times, volunteering is a valuable way you can support DUC and contribute to the wetland conservation cause. Volunteers donate something just as precious as money: their time. Best of all, as a volunteer, you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the results of your work all around you.

If you’re concerned about wildlife and the depletion of wetland habitat, are looking for a new way to engage your community and want to give back to the natural areas you benefit from daily, consider starting a DUC volunteer chapter. DUC needs your help in Prince Rupert! You need wetlands, and wetlands need you. Become a DUC volunteer and see how rewarding wetland conservation can be.
