NEWS RELEASE · 28th April 2011
Old Massett Village Council
OMVC is doing water testing to make sure we are not exposed to radiation from the events in JAPAN. I will post the latest test results on the band office bulletin board and on the HEALTH CENTER bulletin board as soon as the results come in.

We are testing the rainwater, the stream water (near Rivtow) and the tap water. In addition we will be testing other products as we think this is necessary.

We are testing for: Cesium 134, Cesium 137, Iodine 131 & Ruthenium 103

TEST DATE: April 21st. 2011.

RESULTS: We are seeing an increased presence of one radiation component (Iodine -131) in RAIN WATER. This number keeps fluctuating but has settled down this last week to a level that is only a little above background levels. Therefore if people discarded all their previously collected rain water and used only freshly gathered water I see no immediate risk. However, because the weather and events in Japan keep changing, to be completely safe it would be best not to drink rainwater at all.

We are testing seaweed at this time and will post the results as soon as we receive them.
We are planning to monitor home grown vegetables and fish products too very soon. We will also post these results.

Both tap water and stream water continue to show absolutely no signs of any radiation contamination and therefore are safe to drink from our viewpoint.
