NEWS RELEASE · 31st August 2010
Prince Rupert RCMP
Prince Rupert RCMP trained thirteen community members in June 2010 to become Citizens on Patrol (COP). These dedicated volunteers patrol our streets, parks, parking lots, docks and highway to help make our community a safer place for everyone.
The information COPs observe, record and report can lead to arrests, recovery of property, prevention of crimes and vital first aid or police attention to those in need. “The extra sets of eyes and ears they provide are invaluable to our detachment” states Crime Prevention officer Cst. Stevenson.
This past Summer the COPs have assisted with a residential fire and have called BC Ambulance on numerous occasions to assist people in need of medical care. They have reported insecure premises that police have then checked out for possible break and enters, as well as called in assaults in progress and possible impaired drivers and other traffic violators. COPs are available to patrol neighborhoods and residences where extra patrols are requested by the public or RCMP. If your neighborhood or business is in need of extra patrols please contact Cst. Erin Stevenson by phone at 627-0700 or e-mail at erin.m.stevensonrcmp-grc.gc.ca
Anyone interested in being part of this rewarding program please contact Cst. Erin Stevenson. If you cannot dedicate your time, you can always be involved by donated funds or in-kind contributions. City West has donated cell phones to the program and Petro-Can has donated gas cards for our participants. We are currently looking for other gasoline sponsors to keep the COP vehicles out on the street.
