NEWS RELEASE · 23rd August 2010
Prince Rupert RCMP
On Thursday, August 19, 2010 at approximately 7:30 a.m. a bicycle and vehicle collided on McBride and 9th Avenue East. The vehicle was traveling on 9th Avenue East attempting to enter onto McBride Street and the bicycle operator was traveling on the sidewalk South bound beside McBride. The 23-year-old bicycle rider was wearing a helmet and sustained injuries to his mid-section. He was taken to the hospital for a more thorough examination. The 49-year-old driver did not have any injuries, and the vehicle had minor damage.

Bicycles are considered vehicles and need to follow all the same rules as vehicles. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. The fine for riding on a sidewalk or cycling without care is $109. Smaller children and people that lack the skills to ride on the road may use the sidewalk but have to operate the bicycles at a very slow speed and yield to pedestrians. Riding on the sidewalk does not give you the right away. Riders and walkers need to stop at intersections and proceed only when safe to do so.

Vehicles have to do their part and be considerate of bicycles on the roadways and slow down or give them extra space when appropriate. When approaching an intersection, bikes, vehicles and pedestrians need to do a thorough check to make sure it is clear before they proceed. This is the second accident to occur on McBride that involved drivers entering intersections before they are safe to enter.
