NEWS RELEASE · 15th July 2010
Prince Rupert RCMP
The week of July 5- July 11, 2010 Prince Rupert RCMP received 213 calls for service.

An attempted break and enter was called in after the resident noticed marks on the side door and screen of the residence. No entry was gained, and nothing taken, but there was something left, unfortunately not prints or break in tools, but a dead fish covered with flies. Kind of gives new meaning to the term cat burglar.

Police and fire attended a residential fire that left minimal damage to a home. A male had passed out while cooking in his residence. Some recipes do call for a bit of alcohol, but it doesn't mean you have to finish the bottle. Fires can get out of control very quickly. Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly and your family knows what to do in case of a fire. Practice your evacuation plans, it may safe a life.

When the help sometimes hurts. A concerned citizen called in a male who appeared to have been beaten up. The male stated he had been punched in the head, eye and mouth. The intoxicated male was taken to the hospital by police. The victim was recently released on conditions five days earlier not to consume alcohol and was therefore arrested for breaching his conditions.

A male was arrested on an outstanding warrant and while he was transported to the cell he left a baggie full of marijuana joints in the back seat of the police vehicle. The male was arrested for possession and during the statement the male admitted to the drugs being his, but the officer did not get his whole story, because the male started to vomit. Oh the glamorous world of drugs...jail and vomit.

The Prince Rupert Bike Patrol Unit will be starting patrols this week. Officers who trained last week commented on the variety of different incidences they were able to observe by being closer to street level as well as the positive interactions they had with people while on bikes. Policing is a dynamic job and sometimes in order to approach a suspect in a safe and effective manner officers may need to ride on the sidewalks, down one ways in the opposite directions or side by side. The Bike Patrol unit will also be doing vehicle stops, so please pull safely to the side of the road if signaled to do so by an officer on a bike. The majority of bike injuries are head injuries; if you ride a bike you need to wear a helmet. New helmets start at about $15. Riding without a helmet ticket is $29.

The railings around the carving house across from the court house were vandalized by graffiti and three vehicles were keyed over the weekend on the 300 block of 5th Avenue East. Anyone with information on these incidences please call it in.

Crime Stoppers pays cash for information that leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property. We don't want your Name, just your Information. 1-800-222 TIPS.
