The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, today made the following statement on the second round of presidential elections in Timor-Leste:



“Canada congratulates the people of Timor-Leste on the peaceful and orderly conduct of their elections, which mark an important moment in their country's history.



“Canada is encouraged by the development of democracy and return to stability in Timor-Leste. We are proud to be contributing to the multinational civilian police forces in Timor-Leste and continue to support efforts to address the humanitarian situation there.”
