NEWS RELEASE · 7th May 2007
RCMP North Pacific Traffic
May is aggressive driving month is BC. Aggressive driving is one of the top three highway safety concerns along with impaired driving and the non-use of seatbelts. It's a contributing factor in approximately one third of all collisions and two thirds of all traffic fatalities.

Members of the RCMP North Pacific Traffic Services will be out in force targeting aggressive drivers in an attempt to educate the motoring public and reduce the number of serious collisions.

Aggressive driving behaviours include;
*speeding and excessive speeding
*Following to closely (Tailgating)
*Unsafe lane change or weaving in and out of traffic
*Rolling through stop signs
*Fail to stop for yellow or red light
*Blocking intersections
*Fail to yeild

These behaviours often lead to frustrated drivers, and could result in a serious injury/fatal collision or a road rage incident.

A few tips to reduce aggressive driving incidents:

* Allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination
* Recognize that everyone makes mistakes
* Be courteous to other drivers
* When you do get angry create a distraction
0 - Count to 20
0 - Turn on the radio
0 - Monitor your thoughts
0 - Breath deeply, use breathing techniques to relax and regain control

Those who drive aggressively know they do and often make the choice to do so. Now is the time to make the choice to change. If you don't, you will be targeted and you will receive a Violation Ticket. The choice is yours.

If you witness aggressive driving behaviour contact your local police agency and report the incident.

Add Passive Agressive Behaviours!

Time to stop concentrating on the concept someone going 5 kmh over is a 'dangerous maniac' and more one the behaviours of those causing road aggression!
-Speeding up when there are passing lanes, then purposely slowing down when driver's can't pass.
-Straddling the line so people cannot pass you.
-Assuming the right to drive at half the posted limit if you want to.
-Assuming it is your right or duty to interfere with how another person drives (short of reporting them)
-Slamming your brakes on when you feel someone may be tailgating. I have seen people in Hondas do this to a rig, while they're going slowly downhill and the rig is doing everything to slow down!
